Engineering Progress Report (17-08-09)

1. The entire rebuilding project consists of rebuilding of three buildings namely, the Junior Science Block, the Classroom Block and the Office & Administration block. Total estimated cost is RM6.4 million

2. The project will be implemented in phases depending on fund availability. The first phase of the project consists of the junior science block and classroom room block with an estimated cost of RM3.4million. The construction period for junior science and classroom block will be 10 months and 15 months respectively.

3. Tender for phase 1 was called on 5 May 2009 and closed on 25 May 2009.

4. A total of 4 tenderers were received. All submitted tender documents were forwarded to the project’s consultant team for evaluation and preparation of recommendation report.

5. As a cost reduction exercise, the project’s consultant team has amended the designs in area which were deemed to incur high cost. The sub-committee had invited the three lowest tenderers to attend a briefing on the detail of design’s alterations and all tenderers were requested to submit their re-offer by 10 June 2009.

6. On 10 June 2009, all three tenderers submitted their re-offers. The project’s consultant team had also re-submitted their recommendation report which was approved by the Executive Committee meeting of the Kuching Teochew Association on 30 July 2009.

7. Phase 1 of the project is awarded to Fung Hap Construction. The handing over of site to the contractor was carried out on 14 August 2009.

Demolition works for the fire razed buildings commenced which started on 13-3-09 have been completed.The razed buildings were declared structurally unsafe by a professional engineering consultant.
The admin building which was almost 90% destroyed , is totally structurally unstable and shall not be used again.

During the recent Rebuilding Committee meeting on 7 March 2009, it was unanimously agreed that the area be cleared completely leaving the necessary support structure for supporting the roof next to the multipurpose hall. The facade of the historic admin building ( ground floor only ) will remain until rebuilding of the new admin building commences .
